Dina Wadia, daughter of Mohammad Ali Jinnah Rattanbai Petit, passed away yesterday on 2nd November 2017 in New York. She was the only child of Mohammad Ali Jinnah and Rattanbai who got married to Indian Parsi named Neville Wadia at very young age.
Dina Wadia was born in London on the morning of 15th August 1919 to the founder of Pakistan. Rattanbai was the second wife of Mohammad Ali Jinnah who was a Parsi and was the only daughter of Sir Dinshaw Petit. After wedding Rattanbai embraced Islam and was referred to as Mariam Muhammad Ali Jinnah however they each got separated, Dina Wadia was raised on their lonesome by Muhammad Ali Muhammad Ali Jinnah.
She was very dear to her father, at age of 17 she informed her father that she intended to marry Neville Wadia, who was an industrialist and member of prominent Wadia family. Mohammad Ali Jinnah scolded her and said that ‘there were millions of Muslims boys in India she can choose anyone but I will not give permission to marry a Parsi boy’, Dina replied to her father that ‘there were millions of Muslim girls in India than why she chose a Parsi woman’?
For Jinnah, the marriage of her daughter was a political embarrassment so he decided to cut off from her daughter but this marriage didn’t last long. Dina Wadia got separated when few years of the wedding from this wedding she had one son named Nusli and one female offspring named Diana. She met her father once after her marriage along with her both kids.
In 2003 she visited Pakistan and went to her father’s grave first time after his death along with her son and 2 grandsons Ness and Jeh. In her later years, she mostly lived in New York but she often made an annual trip to Mumbai just to met her Family and friends. She was really close to her son Nusli and often visited him. On 2nd November 2017, she died in New York at the age of 98. Many people twitted about her death, May her soul rests in Peace.
