Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Hairdressers declared a ban on trimming stylish beards such as goatees or French beards, calling the cuts un-Islamic.
KP Hairdressers Association's president Muhammad Sharif Kahlun said We made the decision after consulting with religious scholars. There is a spreading trend among Pakistani youths to wear stylish beards. Many fashion models, actors and even sportsmen wear such beards.
The provincial government has not commented on the ban.
“but it will be up to each barber whether or not they stick to what we have decided.”
All the Hairdressers are bound from cutting beards in a fashionable way which is against the principles of Islam according to all religious scholars,” read an order issued by the office of the Kharan District Assistant Commissioner Mohammad Baksh Sajdi.
A copy of the order was also sent to other officers concerned including the deputy commissioner, the district police officer, the tehsildar and area’s station house officer.
A maulana had complained about stylish beards and that’s why the notification was issued, assistant commissioner.
The order was later withdrawn as the government said there was no law to issue such an order. However, the magistrate has the government to ban anything, so he requested the barbers and verbally ordered them to avoid fashionable beard cuts.
Although Kahlun's claim of a unity among the barbers, some shop owners told that they were not happy with the decision, as it would negatively impact their business.
Also, some people, especially youth, expressed displeasure over the decision.
